Security Guard Job Duties and Responsibilities
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Surveillance and Monitoring:
- Regularly patrol assigned premises, both indoors and outdoors, to detect and deter any potential security threats.
- Monitor security systems, including CCTV cameras, alarms, and access control systems, to identify any unusual activity.
- Perform routine checks on fire alarms, security equipment, and emergency exits to ensure operational efficiency.
- Access Control:
- Verify the identity of employees, visitors, and contractors entering the premises, ensuring proper authorization.
- Monitor access points to prevent unauthorized entry, ensuring compliance with the facility’s security policies.
- Manage and document visitors by signing them in and out, providing visitor badges, and ensuring they are escorted as necessary.
- Incident Response and Reporting:
- Respond promptly to security incidents, including alarms, disturbances, and emergencies, following established protocols.
- Investigate and document incidents, accidents, or suspicious activities, preparing detailed written reports.
- Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, or emergency medical services when required.
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Be familiar with emergency evacuation procedures, fire safety protocols, and first aid procedures.
- Assist in evacuating individuals during an emergency, ensuring a safe and orderly process.
- Participate in regular drills and training sessions to stay current with safety and security protocols.
- Customer Service:
- Provide a high level of customer service, assisting staff, visitors, and tenants with inquiries while maintaining a professional demeanor.
- Offer directions or guidance when necessary, helping to create a welcoming environment while enforcing security rules.
- Risk Prevention and Threat Analysis:
- Identify and assess potential security threats, hazards, or vulnerabilities within the premises.
- Collaborate with security management to implement strategies for reducing risks and enhancing safety measures.
- Report any broken or malfunctioning security equipment to the appropriate authorities for repair.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate and detailed logs of daily activities, incidents, and observations.
- Record all security-related events, actions taken, and follow-up procedures in a clear and timely manner.
- Ensure that all security equipment, keys, and vehicles are accounted for and properly secured at the end of each shift.
- Vehicle and Parking Lot Security:
- Monitor parking areas, ensuring that vehicles are parked correctly and that unauthorized vehicles do not enter restricted zones.
- Observe for any signs of theft or vandalism in parking areas and take necessary action to prevent such activities.
- Collaboration with Local Authorities:
- Work closely with law enforcement, fire, and medical teams when incidents occur or when requested for assistance.
- Report criminal activity or violations of the law to the appropriate authorities in a timely manner.
- Shift and Site Management:
- Ensure smooth handover between shifts, communicating relevant information to incoming guards.
- Ensure that security staff follows all guidelines and procedures, and provide guidance or support as needed.
- Enforce Policies and Procedures:
- Uphold the policies and regulations set forth by the employer regarding security practices, building safety, and code of conduct.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information and incidents.
- Security Equipment Handling:
- Properly handle, use, and maintain security devices and equipment such as radios, flashlights, firearms (if applicable), and any other safety tools provided.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a security guard or in a similar role is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of security protocols, emergency procedures, and public safety principles.
- Ability to stay calm and act decisively in high-pressure situations.
- Physical fitness and stamina to conduct regular patrols and stand for long periods.
- Basic knowledge of first aid and emergency response.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to use security technology and report incidents accurately.
Working Conditions:

Full-time or part-time positions may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Guards may be assigned to either indoor or outdoor areas, depending on the security needs of the facility.
